Dental implants are safe and secure titanium posts that are surgically placed into the jaw. They are placed underneath the gums and designed so that our dentist can easily mount your replacement teeth onto them. Depending on your needs, we may recommend fixed or removable replacement teeth that have been made to match the size, shape and color of your natural teeth.
There are many advantages for those patients who choose dental implants over dentures. Some of the most common benefits associated with dental implants include:
Once we have determined that you are a good candidate for dental implants, we will begin working on an individualized treatment plan that fits your health and lifestyle needs. Next, our highly-skilled and knowledgeable dentist will tooth root the implant. The implant itself is made from titanium and placed into the bone socket where the missing tooth used to sit. Over time, the jawbone will heal and grow around the implanted metal post. This process allows the titanium post to become anchored securely in the jawbone. In most cases, the healing process takes anywhere from 6 to 12 weeks.
After the implant has become securely anchored into the jaw, we will attach a small connector post, called an abutment so that we can mount your replacement tooth. To create a new replacement tooth that looks and feels natural, we will make an impression of your teeth and create a model of your bite. Once we have the model completed we can make a new tooth, or crown, that matches perfectly.
Additionally, some patients may require more than one old tooth to be replaced. If this is the case, instead of creating one or more individual crowns, we may recommend using an attachment for your implant that can support a removable denture. There is typically very little discomfort associated with the dental implant process and most patients report that it is less painful than a tooth extraction. Once the implant process has been completed, keep in mind that dental implants require the same amount of care as your natural teeth. Continue to brush, floss and rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash as normal.
Enjoying a healthy and comfortable smile doesn’t have to be difficult when you have an experienced and skilled dentist to help design your dental implants.
